New 16X DVD-ROM drive offers speed and multimedia performance

SAN JOSE, CA-Acer Peripherals America (APA) today introduced a new addition to their Optical Drive line: the Acer 1640A, a 16x DVD-ROM drive. The 1640A is the fastest DVD-ROM in the U.S. market today, proof of Acer’s commitment to cutting edge technology. This 16X Drive will offer data transfer rates of up to 21,600 KB/sec and CD-ROM transfer rates of up to 6,000 KB/sec. The 1640A will be available in June at a suggested retail price of $179.

The trend of replacing the CD-ROM with DVD-ROM is becoming more prevalent and Acer Peripherals is focused on being the speed leader in this category. The increased popularity of DVD movie titles and the promise of new DVD game titles is driving the DVD-ROM demand to new heights. “The new 1640A gives users an easy and affordable way to add the best available DVD multimedia experience to their PC,” said John Hall, Director of Marketing at Acer Peripherals America. The 1640A comes with a powerful software bundle including Cyberlink PowerDVD and PowerPlayer, delivering support for MPEG-2 video that rivals the performance of any MPEG hardware solution. Cyberlink PowerDVD delivers 720 x 480 MPEG-2 video resolution with screen capture functions and 5.1 channel AC-3 surround sound. PowerPlayer automatically detects and plays many different file types including all types of audio/video files and MP3’s. The 1640A offers backward compatibility to most common CD formats and incorporates an anti-vibration mechanism to maintain reliability during high speed reading. The easy-to-install IDE/ATAPI interface gives users a quick solution to upgrade their PC to add the DVD multimedia experience.
